We often think of Ancient Rome and Ancient Athens as being at the top of the pile when it comes to standards of living in Europe centuries ago. That’s not without good reason - both cities were incredibly advanced for their time, and were responsible for countless inventions and innovations. Focusing on the Roman and Greek capitals is doing the rest of Europe a disservice though - there were many incredible ancient cities in Europe; the remains of which can still be seen today.
