5,500-year-old leather shoe to be displayed in Yerevan
The 5,500-year-old leather shoe discovered in Areni 1 cave will be displayed as part of the “In the footsteps of ancient man: Stone Age” exhibition to open at the History Museum of Armenia on September 9.
The exhibits range from stone tools made 1.8 million years ago to various remarkable finds of the 5th millennium BC.
In particular, the exhibition includes high-value Stone Age samples from various ancient sites in Armenia, among which are a 500-300 thousand-year-old hand cutter, a stone ax dating from the 6th millennium BC, a small clay vessel dating back to the 5th millennium.
The exhibition will also present a leather shoe found in 2008 during the excavations at the Areni-1 cave, which dates back to 3600-3500 BC. It will be displayed in a showcase that provides stable conditions for the shoe, which was prepared thanks to a grant provided by the Government.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Areni-1 Cave scientific research fund, the Armos footwear enterprise, the “United States of Armenia” national-patriotic non-governmental organization and other partners.
