In ancient Egypt, beauty and hygiene were highly valued and represented more than just a person's physical appearance. People showed their social standing through the amount of makeup they wore, while statues of Egyptian gods were adorned in the same cosmetics to emphasize how closely associated beauty could be with holiness. Above all else though was cleanliness. It wasn't simply for good health or warding off evil spirits; hygiene also served as an indication of humility that needed to be respected.
