Socotra - The treasure island between Yemen and Somalia
Socotra, a Yemeni island regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world, has become a peaceful haven for tourists amid the country's ongoing civil war. The United Arab Emirates launched the first direct flights to the island in 2021, which is located about 400 kilometers off the Yemeni mainland.
The island is home to a range of unique endemic species, including the iconic dragon's blood tree, which is under threat due to climate change and human encroachment. While tourism is providing a much-needed boost to the local economy, there are concerns about the ecological impact of holiday homes being built in protected areas, as well as the influence of foreign powers such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Environmental activist Ahmed Adib is trying to protect the island's natural heritage but is struggling due to a lack of financial support and the ongoing war. Despite these challenges, many locals are hopeful that more tourists will continue to visit the island and provide opportunities for economic growth.
