A tomb from the Hellenistic period is uncovered in Kuşadası, modern Turkey

The tomb discovered in Kusadasi, Aydin, was probably built 2350 years ago for a high official.

Part of the mound was excavated between 1974 and 1978, but not fully uncovered.

Dr. Aydin Erön stated that they have identified the mound, whose existence has been known since the 1950s but was covered up over time, and the work to uncover it has already begun.

Dr. Aydin Erön pointed out that the so-called Kustur Tomb is one of the mausoleums believed to have been built in the Hellenistic period, adding, "The mound in the area is a structure that has not been studied for a long time. Therefore, it is important for us to clean and re-examine this structure. Because we do not find tombs like this from 350 to 300 B.C. very often."

"We can already say that the masonry is of very high quality. The Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism and Adnan Menderes University have supported us in the work in 2022. On this occasion, we had the opportunity to clean the surroundings of the mound. We believe that it is a valuable archaeological monument from the tourism point of view. There are not many such funerary monuments from the Hellenistic period. If such a monument is discovered and exhibited in Kusadasi, the area will have more visitors".

The burial mound in question is almost intact and has a diameter of 23 meters. According to archaeologists, it is very difficult to find such a solid funerary monument in today's Western Anatolia.

The provincial director of Culture and Tourism of the region said that they were trying to start excavations in the area.
