Archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Magnesia in Aydın province in Türkiye uncovered the altar of the Temple of Magnesia Zeus, a replica of which is on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
Excavations in the Ancient City of Magnesia are being carried out under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Görkem Kökdemir, a faculty member at Ankara University Department of Archaeology.
As a result of the works that started two years ago, the remains of the Temple of Zeus, located in the area defined as the "religious agora" in the ancient city, were unearthed.
During the works carried out in the western part of the temple, an altar 3 meters 53 centimeters wide, 5 meters 10 centimeters long and 70 centimeters high was unearthed.
It is believed that the altar was used in sacrificial ceremonies in the cult of Zeus.
In his statement, Dr. Kökdemir reminded that nearly 600 architectural blocks belonging to the Temple of Zeus were removed from the excavation area.
